✦ CHAPTER 3: BUILDING A COMMUNITY ✦

🌱 “You cultivate your own community — you are the example.”

💡 What does it mean to “build a community”?

You cultivate your own community.

That’s so important to understand.

You are the star of the show — the one setting the tone — and the way your space feels is going to be based on what you allow and model.

And while some people are way too strict when it comes to moderating their communities, others are way too lenient and let chaos (or toxicity) run wild.

The truth is:

Your community will follow your lead.

If you’re clear, kind, and consistent — your community will reflect that.

✦ PART 1: Set the Example

If you want a calm, funny, welcoming, or safe space — you need to embody that.

You want to be the kind of person that you want to bring into your chat.

You want to be the vibe that you want to cultivate.

🧠 Make expectations clear

There should be no guesswork about what is okay and what isn’t.

People should know:

This doesn’t mean you need a 20-page rulebook.

It just means your energy should communicate the boundaries clearly — and if someone does cross the line, it should be obvious why it’s a problem.

✦ PART 2: Actually Care About People

This is the real secret sauce.

If you want people to show up for you, put in effort for you, support you…

You need to put that same effort into them.

A lot of people treat “community building” like a trick. It’s not.

It’s just caring about people like real human beings.

✨ Real Example: Titan

One of my regulars — Titan — has been to literally every single stream since they found me.

Here’s what happened:

  1. They saw one of my Warhammer shorts on TikTok.
  2. They left a comment like, “Whoa, a VTuber that plays Warhammer? That’s sick.”
  3. I replied and said, “Oh yeah! I play with viewers all the time — join my Discord!”
  4. They joined the Discord, showed up to stream… and they’ve never left.

All because I answered a comment like a real person. That’s it. That’s all it took.

✦ PART 3: Be Present In Your Own Community

This is a big one.

A lot of creators build a Discord server… and then vanish from it.

If you want people to hang out there — you need to actually be there yourself.

Your community should feel like they’re hanging out with you — not waiting around for you.

✦ PART 4: Light Parasociality (It’s Okay!)

I’m a firm believer in light parasociality.

That means:

It’s okay if people care about you. It’s okay if people feel close to you.

That’s part of building a supportive fanbase.

Just don’t blur the line too far.

✦ PART 5: Boundaries & Moderation (Without Being Weird About It)

Some creators over-police their chats to the point of making them sterile and unfun.

Others let their chats go completely off the rails with chaos or parasocial weirdness.

The sweet spot is in the middle.

Be clear, be kind, and don’t be afraid to redirect someone — but also don’t treat people like enemies when they make small mistakes.

✨ Example: Self-Promo “Mistake”

Let’s say someone pops into your chat and says:

“Hey, I’m going live soon! But I hope you have a great stream!”

Now, technically, that’s a self-promo. But…

You could:

Or you could just say:
